Wood spotted a small house in Eldon, Iowa, with a distinctive pointed-arch window and decided to paint it together with “the kind of people” he imagined living there. He then asked his sister Nan to model the woman and his dentist, Dr. McKeeby, to model the man. The two models never posed together in front of the house; Wood created the composition separately.
