To understand how tattooing became the widely accepted art form it is today, we have to travel back to the smoky waterfront neighborhoods where modern tattoo culture first found its footing, caught fire, and forever changed the way people viewed the human body as a canvas.
The world of modern tattooing underwent a major transformation at the end of the 19th century, particularly in New York City. It was here that the invention of the electric tattoo machine revolutionized a practice that had previously depended on slow, difficult, and often painful manual methods. The center of this technological shift was the Bowery, a gritty and energetic neighborhood that would eventually earn a reputation as the birthplace of American tattooing. Early tattoo artists opened small shops in cramped storefronts and backrooms, where they experimented with new technology and adapted existing mechanical inventions. One of the most important developments came when Samuel O’Reilly modified Thomas Edison’s electric pen and created an early electric tattoo machine. Spanning roughly the first 75 years of the 20th century, the collection includes rare work from influential artists such as Sailor Jerry Collins, Bob Shaw, Bert Grimm, and Charles Wagner.
Beyond preserving beautiful artwork, collections like this also help show how tattooing evolved from an underground subculture into a respected form of visual expression. For years, tattoos were often overlooked by traditional art circles, despite the creativity, technical skill, and personal storytelling involved in creating them. Saving old flash sheets allows us to better understand the artists, communities, and traditions that shaped the industry. It also reminds us that art does not only belong inside museums or galleries.
