Everyone has different expectations when they go on vacation. Some people want nothing more than to relax on the beach, sip piña coladas and get a nice tan. Meanwhile, others might be excited to explore every inch of a new city while walking 33,000 steps each day. As long as you get to set your own itinerary, your vacation should be great!

Nearly half of American adults under the age of 50 are childfree

The author of this story made it clear that she’s childfree by choice, meaning she has no intentions of ever having kids, and her family seems to have a hard time understanding that. But nowadays, it’s actually quite common to have zero dreams of becoming a parent.

According to a 2023 survey from the Pew Research Center, 47% of adults between the ages of 18 and 49 in the United States say that they’re unlikely to ever have children. In 2018, however, only 37% of American adults under the age of 50 said the same.

When it comes to why so many people have decided they don’t want kids, childfree adults cite a variety of reasons. One of the most common is simply because they don’t want to. Many people also report that they want to focus on other things.

Meanwhile, some childfree adults voiced concerns about the state of the world. Not everyone wants their children to face the same challenges they’ve faced or to be around when global warming becomes even worse. At the same time, many childfree adults admit that they probably couldn’t even afford to raise kids.

On the other hand, sometimes it just comes down to personal relationships. Many childfree adults never found the right partner to settle down with. And some say that they just don’t really like children. Others cite the negative experiences they had in their own childhoods as well. And some note that medical reasons or having a spouse who didn’t want kids stopped them from ever starting a family.

Using family members for childcare comes with risks

Now, some people who choose not to have kids of their own are thrilled to become the cool aunt or fun uncle who visits for exciting weekends several times a year. After all, there’s a big difference between getting to play with kids for hours at a time then sending them back to Mom and Dad and needing to take care of them (and pay for them) 24/7.

But it’s important for parents to understand what kind of relatives they have, so they don’t end up forcing responsibilities on unwilling victims. As far as whether or not it’s ever a good idea to ask relatives to babysit, it completely depends on the family.

Care.com warns that there are pros and cons to using family for childcare. On one hand, it might be extremely convenient to just reach out to a parent or sibling to watch your kiddos. You trust them, you know they love your children, and they might not expect any payment for helping out.

However, having family members babysit can be tricky when they’re not being paid. They might start to feel like they’re being taken advantage of if they’re expected to watch the kids often. And as a parent, it might feel like you suddenly have to plan around your babysitter’s schedule, instead of the other way around.

It can also be challenging to enforce boundaries with family members since you won’t have an employee-boss relationship with them. You’ll have to be careful not to step on their toes, and if you do, your relationship might become strained.
