To be fair, there's also a law in Canada where it's a crime to 'engage' with someone under 18 (but over 16) if the older person is A) In a position of trust or authority over the youth. Among other factors. Which absolutely includes teachers. Not that people fleeing to Canada actually take the time to look at the details...

Woman Adores Her Engagement Ring, Changes Her Mind After Finding Out How Much It Cost
Woman Adores Her Engagement Ring, Changes Her Mind After Finding Out How Much It Cost

I once knew a girl who told her boyfriend she'd refuse to marry him if he spent less than 3 months salary on a ring. I've always done the judgy side eye at women who insist on expensive engagement rings. I was ready to judge OP as a shallow, materialistic person with her priorities all wrong. However, the whole Temu thing feels wrong. Like, I understand wanting a deal, and not wanting to spend a fortune. But $38 from Temu? Even he knows that's kind of crappy because he tried to hide it. If he was comfortable with his purchase he would have been up front about it when she asked. And now his refusal to even discuss his choice---this all just feels really off. I think the boyfriend saw a bargain and jumped on it.There was no thought or care put into it beyond the price. I think that is the problem. My ring was less than $300. It still came from an actual jewelry store. And my husband took me to pick it out because he wanted to be sure I liked it.

Plus, there's just this gigantic gap between insisting that someone prove they love you with some big, showy purchase and getting quite literally the cheapest hunk of junk he can get his hands on and then blaming her for feeling completely and obviously treated as having no true worth. That "our doordash cost more" was like a gut punch for how it must have felt to her. So, pretty clearly she shouldn't marry a guy who can't see that rejecting possibly poisonous junk is actually rational and a good boundary. Plus, it's going to look like cloudy, cheap trash after two weeks of normal hand washing. And "buy your own ring" really should lead to "I will, from my own apartment where I will be celebrating being single" because he's mad at her when he's behaving poorly. I know couples who got engaged with gumball machine rings because that was what they could afford. But that isn't what happened here. He tried to pretend it was a normal, higher quality ring. Huge red flag.

The way I read it, I think she's more bothered by the fact that he tried to pass it off as something more valuable. If he lied about something like this, and she had never thought of him as dishonest, then what else could he hide? There might be nothing. But him avoiding it just make that doubt grow worse.

Even putting aside the whole thing that it's from Temu, I think what actually hurts isn't the low cost. It's the fact that he tried to cover it up. He got a 40$ ring, and tried to pass it off as something much more valuable. I think the part that actually hurts is that he lied. And each time he was pressed on his lie, he fled the conversation. Trust takes a lot of time to be built, and a moment to be broken. And his avoidance is rapidly breaking that trust even more. That's what's hurting her, not the value of the ring.
