Legal aid here.. Unfortunately, landlords such as OP exist in abundance in the US. And the vast majority of the laws (at least in Virginia) are designed to protect the landlord. When democrats were in control here, we were able to get some simple protections for tenants in place, such as a 14-day pay-or-quit notice (which gives tenants a chance to get paid and catch up on arrears, before they're taken to court) rather than the 5-day notice that had been in place forever. One of the first things the republicans did when they took over last year was to revert back to a 5-day pay-or-quit notice. Our police departments and courts depend on the fees charged for evictions, garnishments and warrants in debt, all issues that largely affect folks with low incomes. The poverty industrial complex is real, at least in the US. People who have grown up with income security and never faced financial hardship will never, IMO, understand what a different reality it is to be poor and alone.

Just about anywhere else is mixed opinion and it depends what area you are in when it comes to individual states (larger cities are usually more open, but it doesn't mean smaller cities are dangerous). Pacific West is most commonly known as the friendliest area, but North Atlantic is also good.

I grew up in Michigan and it's not that low! The city I grew up in was pretty republican plus it was a tourist and retirement town. However, they had a gay night club, no issues or hate crimes. I've been to the bigger cities like Grand Rapids, Detroit, and Saginaw. Some of those cities just have a high crime rate period, nothing to do with the LGBTQ community.
