Jane Maru is a multi-media and prolific batik artist who curates her own shows in uncommon spaces: an old grain elevator on a Montana rail yard, a mid-century Eichler home in southern California; in the Mojave desert among the mesquite trees backlit by the setting sun. Her work reflects a playful attitude with wild, elemental designs on silk, inspired by nature, and her whimsical animations borne from a child-like innocence and simple humor that is altogether lost in this age of CGI. She moves seamlessly from recluse to party maven, solo work to vibrant collaborations. Batik has gotten a bit of a bum rap in the art world, but Jane saw the potential of creating lush, layered, complex images that are transcendent. There are wondrous surprises to be discovered in the works and worlds of Maru, from elaborately detailed paintings full of vivid color, light and dimension to found object sculptures.
