There's a wonderful bit in the book "Three Men In A Boat (To Say Nothing Of The Dog)" by Jerome K. Jerome in which the dog, Montmorency, starts barking furiously and running towards a random cat sauntering away down the street, and the cat just turns around and LOOKS at Montmorency, and he stops, backs away, and then runs and hides behind his human.

My dog, Fenring, is a Belgian Malinois. He's a fairly large dog (65lbs/29kg) and he has a very large dog crate that he sleeps in at night. Fenring was raised with my cats and he LOVES all of my cats... except for my oldest cat, Kohl, who he fears. Kohl is 8lbs (3.5kg.) She doesn't even swat or hiss at him, but he is still terrified of her. Sometimes she will saunter into his crate for some reason, and he'll flee the crate as if monsters are after him XD Then there is just a very small black cat sitting in the middle of an extra large (4ft by 3ft) dog crate XD
