There are a lot of childhood memories that get turned on their head when one grows up and has enough context to process what was really going on. As it turns out, those brief bursts of clarity aren’t limited to just times when one was a kid.
Someone asked folks online to share “Something you found out YEARS later and immediately went: Wait. That’s what was happening?” and netizens answered. So get comfortable as you scroll through, upvote your favorite stories and be sure to add your own examples to the comments down below.

When I was a kid, we would have these women stay at our house sometimes. They were so kind, and would do my hair and let me play with their extensive makeup collections. I remember having braids and curls and loving the dress up parties! I thought it was completely normal! Just cool older sister types hanging out. Turns out, the nonprofit my parents worked for helped women escape [illegal] work if they weren’t there willingly… and they would sometimes stay with us until they had somewhere safe to go.

I thought my dad would take us camping on the beach his weekends he had us just because we loved it so much. I had absolutely no clue that we were homeless for a time because he made it feel like such an adventure.

Them: “Hey has your child ever been evaluated for ADHD/Autism? We’ve noticed that…”
Me: “oh no, that’s normal for her. That’s how I always was as a kid too.”

When I was 10 my aunt decided to take my brothers and me to Disneyland. It was all very last minute and unorganized. We stayed in a hotel nowhere near Disneyland and a friend of hers came with us. A few days after we came back, my parents told us they were divorcing. It wasn’t until 20 years later I even realized my dad was moving out while I was on a space mountain. My aunt had a trip planned to newport beach and decided to make it a Disney trip to save us having to be home for that.

Our grandmother used to keep guinea pigs for all the grandkids. It got too much for her so we were informed they’d “gone to live on a farm”. Being cynical teens, we rolled our eyes because we *knew* that was a euphemism for having them put to sleep.
Anyway, at least ten years later it came up in conversation and it was mentioned that we *knew* what really happened. My mum looked at me and said “they actually DID go to a farm.”

"Wow! My high school friend group is super in tune and we can't put a finger on why we feel so connected to each other."
Us 7 years later: ohhhhh it's because we were all gay.

My aunt had a secret baby that she confessed to her son on her deathbed. No one knew but her and my grandparents. So my mom and all her sisters found out the day of her funeral. She also maintained a relationship with him throughout his adult life, unbeknownst to anyone in her family. He’s now officially a part of our family and we are thrilled but WOW.

When I was three, my parents moved 1800 miles away. I thought it was just for a better job (and that was true).
But when I was 47 (and then again at 49), my father revealed, in a very strongly worded way, that we had moved in order to get away from the racism in my parents' families.
They didn't want my brother and I to grow up thinking that same way.

My granny’s perfume wasn’t special Scottish perfume, it was literal scotch. She was a raging alcoholic and the ‘spa’ we visited her at was rehab.

I grew up very sheltered in purity culture in the 90s. In 1999 in college a girl asked to use my computer. I clocked it as weird because the computer lab had faster connections. She said it was fine. We get to my dorm room and chat but she’s not making a move to use my computer. She looks at me with an odd look and everything goes silent. I feel awkward and point her to my PC. She then says she actually needs to go. YEARS later I realize SHE DID NOT WANT TO USE MY COMPUTER!

My grandma would only let us have one sip of her Coke and then shoo us away. When I had my first rum and Coke in college, I realized why.

I always had stomach aches and just didn’t feel well in general. My parents decided I must be lactose intolerant. Spent my childhood/teenage years/early 20s either avoiding dairy or spending $$$ on lactaid pills. There was no mention of the fact that I STILL didn’t feel well. So one day my husband was like “you know this is [nonsense] right and you’re not lactose intolerant?” He took me to Dairy Queen and got me a giant milkshake and…. I was fine. Turns out I just had anxiety and depression.

Once boyhood was over and it was time to “become a man” I felt so disconnected from all the unwritten rules of masculinity and typical masculine behavior just didn’t suit me. Turns out I’ve been a woman this whole time!

One time when I was like 13 I was watching a movie where someone found out their dad wasn’t their real dad or something. And I commented about how I would like to know something like that so I could make an educated decision on if I wanted to contact them. My parents got REALLY weird about it.
So anyways when I was 20 I found out that my dad wasn’t my real dad.

When I was in 1st grade my dad got really into bike riding. He rode bikes with my brother and I everywhere. To and from school, to near by restaurants, the gas station. We were always out and about. Dear Reader, my dad had a DUI. Homie was only allowed to ride a bike.

Filipino grandma would feed us, I grew up thinking everything was from scratch. One day she told me, “yeah I scratch da label”.

My two older brothers and I were in high school at the same time. I played sports, did well in school, funny - no boys came near me. Friend zone. Platonic. I was tall and just assumed that must be it. Years later at a bar a guy approached me and said ‘man I had the biggest crush on you in high school’, but your brothers told me they would kick [me]!’ What!? All that time I thought I was just …not….

House party, 24 years ago. I'm pouring a glass of wine. A hot girl (friend of a friend) walks over to me, holds out her empty glass & said - red wine always makes me think of [intimacy]. Thinking it was just conversation, I said - it makes me think of cheese. Many years later I bumped into her, we got talking & she asked me why I didn't shoot my shot that night.

I was making fun of my father, a Korean War veteran, by saying "I probably have a Korean half-sibling I don't know about."
My father: How about an American one?
