In today’s world, it’s hard to know if and when you’ll become unexpectedly famous. A famous meme that says, “Pff!” is based on the Chinese basketball player, Yao Ming. The moment itself was captured in 2009 during a press conference after a basketball game. The meme symbolizes a feeling of carelessness and has a lot of fans.
5. Salt Bae
A successful Turkish chef named Nusret Gökçe posted a video on his Instagram account where he salts meat. But nobody expected that the way he sprinkled on the salt would become such a popular meme — and neither did he! The photo that later became a meme symbolizes the light, sassy way you go about doing something.
4. The Math Lady
An actress from Brazil named Renata Sorrah starred in a show, Her Own Destiny where her character Nazaré Tedesco was deep in thought. This shot has been used a lot since then accompanied with math formulas and equations in the photo. The meme is now actively used for showing that someone is counting something or that someone’s brain is functioning. For example, 9GAG published it saying “When a woman says she is 29 months pregnant.”
3. “Please, tell me more.”
The shot from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) also became a popular meme symbolizing a lack of trust and a willingness to see what the person will do about the situation they’ve gotten themselves into. This meme of Gene Wilder says, “Please, tell me more…”. Unfortunately, Gene Wilder died in 2016 at the age of 83.
2. Grumpy Cat
The grumpy cat’s name is actually Tardar Sauce and he became famous when his photo was posted on Reddit. Many people were surprised to learn the image wasn’t photoshopped and that Tardar Sauce really looked like this! Later, its owners started posting more pictures of the cat. Grumpy Cat is unbelievably popular and his face has become a meme that is used to represent sadness and depression — sometimes ironically.
1. “I gotta do it.”
You may recognize this large man whose real name is Huell from the hit show, Breaking Bad. It’s safe to say this actor definitely didn’t expect to become this famous from the show. In episode 10, season 5 of the show, the character said the phrase that later became iconic: “I gotta do it.” He then laid down on the heap of money. Now this image is used online to show someone who has become unexpectedly rich.
