Despite being known as our best friends, some dogs are not treated kindly; they are kept alone in cages and put through painful tests. Every year, almost 65,000 dogs go through these tough situations in U.S. labs. Dora, a sweet beagle, was one of them, but thankfully, she found a loving home.
Until recently, Dora's existence was marked only by a number tattooed inside her ear, as she navigated a world of scientific experiments. However, her story took a heartwarming turn when she was rescued and given a chance at a new life.

One Tail at a Time, located in Chicago, is a no-kill rescue that assists numerous families in discovering their new beloved companion through adoption annually.
"End pet homelessness by making pet ownership a joyful and accessible experience for all.
We accomplish this by rescuing animals from overcrowded shelters, placing them in loving forever homes and providing support and resources to pet owners in need," the organization writes on its website.
They put her in a foster family, and there Dora learned to trust people, handle the outdoors, and all the things a good dog should know

According to One Tail at a Time, Dora was rescued after she retired from a medical testing lab. Before that, she was only identified by a number tattooed in her ear. She had to figure out how to go up and down stairs because she never had to before. For a lab dog who spent her whole life indoors, new things like stairs was pretty scary.
Luckily, Dora's temporary caretaker was really helpful in making her feel better and do well. Then, someone else took Dora to get spayed, but they got attached to her and decided to keep her forever because they fell in love with her.

"Luke and I had already been following her story, and it definitely melted our hearts. You can see how she’s flourished in being truly comfortable," Laura shared with the Dodo.
They were transporting Dora to her spay appointment and ended up falling in love with her and couldn’t let her go

"I think something that I’ve loved about her since we’ve gotten to know her is that she's always eager to meet new people and things, even though she used to be really anxious and nervous. Now, you can see how she's genuinely comfortable, just enjoying cozy cuddles and living her happiest life. It's all about her gaining confidence and not being scared anymore."
