Dolly Parton’s revelation about her scars may explain why she always wore gloves
Parton opened up about her scars while discussing her tattoos in a January 2017 interview with Vanity Fair.
“I don’t really like to make a big to-do of it because people make such a big deal over every little thing,” she said.
Elaborating on the reason behind some of her ink, the Jolene hitmaker explained that it was intended to conceal scars from keloid tissue, a condition that left her skin prone to persistent purple discoloration after injuries.
One of the scars Parton concealed with tattoos stemmed from a health scare she discussed with People in September 2020.
“I was very sick for a while, and I had to wear a feeding tube. It left a little indentation on my side, and I didn’t like it,” she said.
While Parton never gave fans a look at her tattoos, she said that “ribbons and bows and butterflies” were among the designs she had.
“The covered hands make so much more sense now,” one netizen wrote.
“Dolly always had a way of handling personal things with such dignity,” another added.
Creative director Steve Summers offered a different explanation for why Parton kept her arms covered
In a 2019 interview with InStyle about Parton, Summers recognized that “people always ask why she always wears sleeves?”
“Well, she’s 73 years old, and she doesn’t like her elbows,” he answered.
“It’s a normal woman thing.”
While Parton neither confirmed nor denied the claim, she opened up about anxieties about her appearance in her memoir, Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business.
“The quest for beauty has always been a struggle for me,” she wrote.
“I cannot remember anybody ever saying that I was one of the more beautiful children they had ever seen. I was a pale, skinny little thing with corn teeth and hair that was fine and close to my head.”
Parton was also not particularly fond of her freckles.
Reflecting on them with her trademark humor, she said, “You could not have said I was as ‘cute as a speckled pup’ without expecting the speckled pup to [pee] on your leg out of resentment.”
The speculation that Parton was hiding corrective surgery beneath her gloves originated from a fan account
According to The Sun, Parton’s fan Duane Gordon said that the singer was asked about her gloves while filming scenes for her 2012 musical comedy Joyful Noise in Atlanta.
She reportedly told the individual who posed the question that she had undergone “corrective hand surgery” — medical, not cosmetic — and that was what she was covering.
Parton never confirmed the same.
The fact that she had been open about various beauty procedures, including a facelift, liposuction, and excess-skin removal, has led some fans to dismiss Gordon’s claim as a rumor.
“Stop spreading lies,” one person said.
“Leave her alone. She’s gone,” pleaded another.
Dolly Parton’s passing came after a brief battle with cancer
In a statement shared with People shortly after Parton’s demise, her team said that the singer was admitted to Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville on Friday, August 21, where she died four days later.
The type of cancer was not disclosed in the statement.
It instead touched on her life and the legacy she left behind.
“Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched. Her unmatched generosity reached the lives of countless people whom she would never meet, yet she was always there to offer a helping hand.
“Whether it be the hundreds of millions of books donated through her invaluable Imagination Library or funding research that helped create a lifesaving vaccine used around the world, Dolly’s unconditional love for all people was the guiding force for her lasting impact."
Parton was preceded in passing by her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, in March 2025.
