The Redditor, u/Grouchy_Tap_8264, shared a friend's story that encapsulates this perfectly. Their buddy’s stepmother made her husband cut all ties with his daughter, breaking their connection for 30 years. However, after the lady’s death, the father is now trying to redeem himself and reunite with his child.

Things weren't easy without the support of her father
Bored Panda reached out to the original author of the story, and they agreed to tell us more about her friend’s experience. Naturally, we were curious to know about their relationship. They told us, “She's just a good friend I've met since moving to a new area, and I'm currently visiting her.”
When asked what inspired them to share the story, they said that they both really enjoy Reddit. The author thought that the friend’s experience would make a really good petty revenge story and decided to post it on the “Petty Revenge” subreddit. At first, the original poster (OP) worried that people would find it more pitiful than satisfying, but “Shannon” told her to share it anyway as she wanted to get people’s reactions.
The heroine also told her friend to write it, as she thought it might sound a bit too much like her, and the family might have recognized her writing style.
When asked how “Shannon” coped with having gone through all of this, the friend shared, "She struggled a lot, but had the support of life-long friends. Things weren't easy. I wish I'd known her then, but I'm only a couple months older than her eldest daughter.”
It might be surprising, but stepfamilies like “Shannon’s” make up a large portion of households. 40% of families in the U.S. are blended, with 1,300 new ones formed every day. It takes the average family five to seven years to fully blend. And during this process, a whopping 75% say they don’t have the resources to navigate their new domestic situation. Without the proper knowledge, it can be difficult to successfully combine two families.

We were also curious to know how their friend’s and her father's relationship evolved since the stepmother passed. They told us, “I feel like she owes her so much more than just paying off the house and, to begin, a genuine apology. For her, though, she was just happy to finally spend Christmas with him.”
They also kindly shared some advice on how to navigate complex stepfamily dynamics and estrangement. “I was raised with my mother by a stepfather, and in every way, he was my parent. I'd say that if dating or considering a serious relationship with a person with kids, or as a parent dating, the kids need to be a part of that relationship once it becomes serious, and marrying a person means the kids are a part of that too. I was lucky to have a wonderful stepfather who is more of a dad than mine, but that isn't the case for all, and it certainly wasn't my friend's experience with her dad and stepmother.”
Still, “Shannon’s” friend sees the father in a negative light. “Personally, I think her father is a weak and pathetic thing who should have made every effort to make his own daughter as important as the kids she brought and the one they had together. And I think he really can't make up for 60 years of not really being there, but again, she's happy to have him now and a relationship with her half-brother.”
As for the heroine, “she thinks that Reddit and I are judging her dad too much, and we should forgive him because her father worked at the businesses owned by "Cruella." She doesn't see it and still thinks he would have been "the best" if not for the horrid stepmother.”
