Bored Panda reached out to Jae Suk Kim, who told us more about his famous Susu Girls.
“I began conceptualizing the Susu Girls when I initially crafted a series of bags characterized by their quirky and playful designs. To me, Susu Girls epitomize high fashion with a delightful sense of quirkiness and fun!” shared Kim.
We asked the artist to walk us through his creative process, to which Kim replied: “My creative process is a blend of carefully curated plans and spontaneous inspiration. While I typically have a rough idea in mind, it’s the spontaneous additions that truly enhance the illustrations, designs, and overall finished look and feel.”
Kim grew up in both Seoul and Sydney. We were wondering how these diverse cultural influences shaped his artistic style and vision. Kim responded: “Growing up in a diverse cultural background has undoubtedly influenced my artistic style and approach, but I believe that a significant portion of my artistic vision has also been shaped by, globally, the growth of social media. Social media platforms have greatly expanded the reach of my work, connecting me with a broader audience. The presentation of my work, including techniques like time-lapse and stop-motion to illustrate my process, wouldn’t have evolved as it has without the pervasive presence of social media as a platform to showcase my creations.”
Working with brands like Chanel and Cartier must be exciting. Therefore, we asked the artist to share his favorite experience from collaborating with them.
“Absolutely! It’s incredibly thrilling to collaborate with a prestigious brand that you’ve long admired. Though each project brought its own unique challenges, my most favorite experience among them all was witnessing people engage with my creations and, ultimately, seeing them come to life in action!” wrote Kim.
And lastly, Kim shared what he hopes people feel or think when they see his art.
“From time to time, I receive feedback that my illustrations bring joy, and viewers find the process videos quite therapeutic. It is my aspiration that my work serves as a source of inspiration, both creatively and in terms of joy! I aspire to continue illustrating Susu Girls and aim to enhance my work by exploring diverse and elevated mediums. Stay tuned for more!”
