Animals are amazing creatures. Their senses can be sharp enough to help us find missing people or detect illegal substances from the faintest trace.

And yet, all that impressive ability doesn’t always stop them from crawling somewhere they shouldn’t or getting themselves hopelessly stuck. Clearly, there’s a lot going on inside those heads.

How smart are animals really? That question is surprisingly difficult to answer because intelligence covers a lot of different abilities.

Researchers generally talk about animal cognition, meaning how animals take in information and use it to make decisions. As Nature Education explains, every species has its own mix of cognitive abilities shaped by the problems it faces in everyday life.

That also makes judging animals by human standards pretty unfair. Researchers at the Max Planck Institute have warned that using human thinking as the benchmark can cause us to overlook abilities that matter enormously to another species.

Instead, scientists can look at how well an animal solves the problems that actually matter in its own world.

Crows are a great example of just how capable animals can be. New Caledonian crows are known for making and using tools to reach food. Researchers wanted to see how far that ability went, so they gave the birds more complicated problems involving several tools and steps.

A University of Cambridge study found that the crows could keep track of tools they couldn’t currently see and plan several moves ahead to reach their goal. That suggests there was a lot more going on than simply grabbing whatever was in front of them.

Sometimes animals can even beat humans at a particular mental task. In one famous study, young chimpanzees briefly saw numbers appear on a screen before they were covered. They then had to remember where those numbers had been.

The young chimps performed better than human adults tested using the same setup. That doesn’t crown chimpanzees the smarter species, of course. It shows how messy the idea of one universal ranking becomes.

And impressive cognition isn’t limited to animals we already expect to be clever. Honeybees can perform a waggle dance that tells other bees where a food source is located, including its direction and distance.

According to Nature Education, bees following that information can also account for the movement of the sun when they head out. A tiny brain can clearly handle some remarkably useful information.
