For Anyone Who Needs A Laugh, These 30 Memes About Life’s Ups And Downs Might Just Do The Trick

We probably don’t need to tell you that memes are very influential in today’s world. They’re not only seemingly everywhere you look, but they also hold quite a lot of power. For example, they can significantly influence a person's daily life. 

To discuss this further, Bored Panda reached out to avid internet user Gerda, who, besides loving animal memes, enjoys ones she can personally relate to.

For example, since she’s a student, school takes up a big chunk of her time, whether she likes it or not. So, she said that memes about it really help her to deal with pressures and the drama that comes from school. This is a perfect example of how it affects someone's daily life. 

School isn’t the only topic that can be made into relatable memes. As we said in the introduction, basically all life struggles can be turned into memes. 

For instance, let’s take mental health issues. Talking about them can be hard, but painting it through a comical meme light can make it easier. Or at least more relatable. 

Our interviewee agrees with this sentiment: “I think sometimes memes can be a perfect way to communicate some feelings. Especially if it’s done with a meme template that’s understood by many so it doesn’t create any confusion.” 

That’s where today’s list comes into play. It’s comprised of memes collected from the Instagram page “My Life Is Upsetting,” which currently has over 300K followers. Quite a harsh name, isn’t it? Well, at least in the bio it says “Just for fun,” so maybe it isn’t as bad as it might look at first glance. 

The memes in this account aren’t that upsetting either. Yes, they’re related to mental health or life struggles, but they’re pretty funny. Well, as we made it clear before, relatability in memes is important, and that’s what makes these fun.

At the same time, relatability not only brings amusement, it also can help people connect. Associate marriage and family therapist Theodora Blanchfield notes that when people share memes, it signifies the trust between them. Plus, to share a meme with someone, you must have a similar perspective and sense of humor, which are factors that connections are based on. 

Our interviewee said that she loves sending memes to her friends and family members: “I think sharing memes is a very fun way to stay in touch. Sometimes you don’t need to say anything, just send a silly picture, which signals to the person you’re thinking about them. Also, making someone’s day brighter even for a second is a nice feeling.” 

At the same time, when sharing memes, especially if they’re of a difficult topic, we should be careful. Not everyone finds the same memes funny. That’s what Gerda noted too: “Memes are intended to be funny and some just don’t understand how something terrible can be funny.” 

She’s not wrong. One piece of research proved that “depression memes” are usually relatable to those who consider themselves to be depressed, but others can find them disturbing. It all comes down to the theory that those who navigate difficult emotional states tend to have darker humor. 

Well, so maybe we can say that this list is meant for people like that. After all, why consume content you don’t like, right?
