Having friends who show up for you when it matters is truly life-changing
Chloe really lucked out with her best friend Sarah, who was more than willing to open her home after a messy breakup. And honestly, that says a lot about her. We all know how devastating breakups can be, especially the ugly ones, and having a safe place to land makes all the difference in the world.

As generous as Sarah has been, it doesn’t seem like Chloe is holding up her end of the deal. Three weeks in and she’s completely taken over the couch, with her laundry spread out everywhere. She blasts reality TV at full volume and spends hours talking loudly on the phone. She’s even told the boyfriend to put on headphones while gaming in his own living room.
She’s also been moving the cats’ belongings around and treating the whole apartment like her personal space. Who knows, maybe she’s just so caught up in her own pain that she hasn’t stopped to think about how this looks. But good intentions only go so far.
When you’re staying at someone else’s place, especially for free, there are some basic unwritten rules that come with the territory. You remember that you’re a guest, which means respecting the routines and boundaries of the people who actually live there. The goal is to make yourself as easy to have around as possible, not the opposite.
Keeping your space clean, offering to help out where you can, and being mindful of noise especially when others are coming home after a long day are all just part of the deal. If you’re not paying a single cent in rent, the very least you can do is make sure the people who are don’t regret saying yes.
Chloe hasn’t been doing any of that. And the longer she stays without a move-out date in sight, the harder it becomes for everyone involved. Sarah may not have said anything, but the boyfriend has clearly hit his limit.
If Chloe can’t respect the space she’s been given, it’s probably time for her to start looking for another option. Sarah has been a great friend. Now it’s Chloe’s turn to act like one.
