Pranks only work when everyone involved finds them funny
Chances are, most of us have dealt with a person like the woman’s magician boyfriend at some point. They’re the type who loves cracking jokes or pulling pranks that only they find funny, while everyone else is just standing there wondering when it’ll end.
And when you tell them their sense of humor has gone too far, they simply say they were kidding or accuse you of being too sensitive. No matter how clearly you explain your feelings, they refuse to listen. That is exactly what happened in this relationship.
In the beginning, the boyfriend’s tricks were mostly harmless, although they were still annoying. He would make the woman’s keys disappear when she needed to leave or hide the cleaning rag when she asked him to help around the apartment. Things became much more serious once he started bringing his “magic” into the bedroom, and not in a good way.
After the first trick made her uncomfortable, the woman asked him to stop. He respected her request for a few weeks, then pulled another stunt during an intimate moment. This time, he placed a magic prop inside her without telling her what he was doing.
She was horrified, while he found the whole thing hilarious. He continued treating it like a harmless prank and could not understand why she was so upset. At that point, the issue was no longer whether the trick was funny. She had clearly asked him not to do it again, and he chose to ignore her.

According to Dr. Kathleen Pike, a professor of psychology at Columbia University, jokes and pranks can be great when they land well. They may help people bond and give them a funny memory to look back on together.
However, that only works when everyone involved is enjoying themselves. When one person is laughing while the other feels hurt, the prank has failed. Brushing off that reaction then gives the prankster an easy way to avoid responsibility. Suddenly, the problem becomes the other person’s response rather than the behavior that caused it.
It is certainly convenient for the prankster. They can argue that they never meant to hurt anyone, so they could not possibly have done anything wrong. But good intentions do not erase the effect their actions had.
Dr. Pike explains that some pranks can be forms of aggression or bullying disguised as harmless fun. The woman in this story made it clear several times that she was not amused. Her boyfriend kept going anyway and refused to take her feelings seriously.
Eventually, she decided that she had had enough and ended the relationship. A year later, she followed up to share that she was doing much better and felt happier without him. It seems that walking away was the right call after all.
