Around 1962-63. All girls school with nuns. Latin exam. Grade 9 I think. Some fill-in-the-blanks questions. One stumped the whole class: “The Romans never wore …..”. People wrote all kinds of TRUE answers: raincoats, top hats, sweaters. We all lost points. I still chuckle to myself. And in the hubbub of school life we never found out what the “correct” answer was supposed to be.

At the end of one of my exams for my environmental engineering degree, the professor had included the following question.
"Why?"
People filled several pages of their blue book (testing materials) with various answers, while some wrote simple one or two word answers. He later explained after the exam ended that the content of the answer didn't matter, but rather the simplicity of it. The question was to test if we could explain to a client in simple words a justification for what we were telling them needed to happen. Those who filled out multiple pages for their answer, naturally, got the answer wrong.

There is the story, perhaps apocryphal, of the student taking a philosophy exam. The paper consisted of one question. Why? All the other students in the exam hall were writing furiously, trying to answer this question in the deepest of ways. The student answered "Because" and passed.
