Would you regret leaving someone you cared about after a year, or would you just forget about them altogether? I had someone who I thought was a great friend until I saw their true colors.

From my observations of friendships (it's a bit different for lovers): It depends on how old you are and what stage of your life you are at. The older you get, the less patience you have for putting up with people's c**p.
If you're still young (younger than 20), then nah! You'll forget all about them. They become barely a footnote in your life.
In your 20's? There might be a few that you'll wonder about later in life. 'Could we have worked it out?', 'Was it really THAT bad?', 'could they be different now?'. But then you put your thinking brain in and realise, 'Actually, I don't care. I've moved on. Besides, I've changed and grown as a person.'
30's? You really don't have time to think about it. You'll forget them the way that you forget co-workers that have left. Until someone mentions them, then you'll say 'Oh yeah, they were a good laugh! A complete AHole! But funny'.
40's? Probably not many real friends left by now. But by now, you're pretty strong in your convictions, so if you make a decision, you've thought it through, and wont regret anything.
50's onwards? You've only got 2 or 3 friends left. You'll never speak of it again, and crack on as though nothing happened.
80's? Your regretting everything you haven't done and every friend you've lost, but it's ok, because you'll tell everyone about what an a**e they were and how it was all their fault.

I've lost contact and ditched many people, including my dad for a number of years.
It really depended on the situation and type of relationship I had with them.
Short run friends, I would just end up moving. Forgetting to say bye. I hadn't known them for long. I regret not saying bye. My mom told me she saw one friend who lived across the street crying. But I also thought she had lost interest with me when 2 other girls moved next to her. Didn't think she still cared.
Some others I have no regrets because those feelings to care about that someone have long darkened.
