She told the “True Off My Chest” community about her partner referring to “liking them petite” when she gained a few kilograms. It didn’t take long for the woman to snap, as she was underweight even after the change in the numbers on the scale. The redditor received much-needed support in the comments, while the husband sustained quite a few burns.

The OP was understandably hurt by her husband’s jokes and comments as body image can be a sensitive topic. It is related to body shaming, which puts pressure on both genders but is believed to affect the fair sex slightly more.

Back in 2010, nearly 90% of female characters in children’s cartoons were underweight. To make matters worse, some programs shed a different light on the underweight and overweight, portraying the latter as less intelligent or happy.
The other side of the coin in this case is no better. Being too thin might not meet certain societal expectations or standards as well. And despite the percentage of such bodies being way smaller than the one representing the overweight (3-5% vs. 39% respectively), it might cause numerous health problems, both physical and mental.

Body image can be an especially delicate topic to those who have dealt with eating disorders. Unfortunately, as much as 9% of people experience them at some point in their lives. They can have a dire effect on one’s mental well-being, which makes it more difficult to get out of the grip of such illnesses. That is why support from one’s loved ones is extremely important.
