Move Over Raygun, Australia Has A New Famous Athlete, And She Is Waking Up The White Privilege Mob

By now, you have probably seen the photographs from the Hyrox competition in Beijing, and if you have not, your imagination will do the job just fine. Joanna Wietrzyk, 24, a world record holder and one of the best Hyrox athletes on the planet, completed an entire fitness race while visibly soiled. She used shared equipment, crossed the finish line in first place, and posted a selfie from a hospital bed afterward with the caption: “a win is a win.” Is it really, though? Most of the conversation that followed was about her doody to the sport, which is fair enough because it was impossible to ignore. What was easier to ignore, and what almost everyone did ignore, was the question that a special education teacher and PhD student named Jeanne Bohnert raised from her corner of TikTok. She was not interested in the health protocols, the rulebook, or what Hyrox should have done differently. She wanted to know why an elite athlete losing control of her bowels in a public space becomes a story about warrior spirit, while a child with a disability who cannot manage their bodily functions in a classroom becomes a reason to question whether that child belongs there at all. Same biohazard, different conversation. And in another light, one could ask, would Joanna have been the champion had her skin tone been different, her hair texture a bit less Scandi, or her name more difficult to pronounce? Bored Panda spoke to Bohnert exclusively, and to sociologist and author Dante King, whose work examines race, power, and who receives grace when the human body violates a social norm. What they had to say goes well beyond Beijing, Hyrox, and one very bad day on a shared rowing machine. So, whose mess is worth cleaning up? The format is simple in theory and brutal in practice: competitors alternate between running one kilometer and completing eight functional workout stations, including a rowing machine, sled pushes, burpee broad jumps, sandbag lunges, and wall balls. Whoever finishes first wins. Approximately 1.5 million people across thirty countries have now competed in a Hyrox event, and the co-founder has publicly stated he is convinced the format will make it to the Olympics. She holds the overall Women's Solo Pro world record with a time of 54:25, set earlier this year at the Warsaw Major. A video had circulated on Weibo of Wietrzyk trying douzhi, Beijing's famously pungent fermented mung bean drink, which is an acquired taste even for people who grew up with it and a gastrointestinal adventure for those who did not. But Wietrzyk has not made an official statement about the cause, just saying that she felt fine before the race. shanghaidaily / X What is known is that at Station 4, the burpee broad jumps, her body made a decision that her competitive instincts declined to honor, and the race continued. Through Station 5, the rowing machine, where she sat directly on a shared seat. Through Station 6, the farmers carry. Through Station 7, the sandbag lunges, where athletes drop to their knees on the shared floor. Through Station 8, the wall balls, one hundred repetitions of throwing a weighted ball against a wall while standing on a shared surface. Through the finish line, in first place, forty-five seconds ahead of reigning world champion Alyssa McElheny. After the race, she posted a photograph from what appeared to be a hospital bed, IV attached, with the caption: "Go hard or go home… a win is a win. In all seriousness, thank you for all the support. I'll be back soon x." The post was later deleted, and she has not spoken publicly since. Luckily, the only person confirmed to have required medical attention that day was Wietrzyk herself. uncutindia.in / Instagram Jeanne Bohnert has a Master's degree in Special Education, is currently completing her PhD, and works as a social skills coach supporting neurodivergent children and adults with emotional regulation and social connection. She posted a TikTok video about the Hyrox incident that reframed the entire conversation, and Bored Panda spoke to her exclusively to understand the nuances involved. In her work advocating for children with disabilities and high support needs, poop comes up constantly as a reason why these children do not belong in mainstream classrooms, in public spaces, or in society more broadly. A child with severe special needs who has difficulty managing their own bodily functions is treated, frequently and reflexively, as a problem too significant to accommodate. Their presence is framed as a burden, a health risk, a disruption. The argument against their inclusion is often precisely the one that should have been made in Beijing: this is a biohazard; this affects everyone around them; this cannot be tolerated in a shared space. And then a world-class athlete produced the same biohazard in a shared competitive space, contaminated equipment used by thousands of other competitors, and was praised for her determination. "I've seen a lot of people talking about how she has white privilege, and if she were a different color, none of this would have flown, which I think is a hundred percent true," Bohnert says. "I think society finds it easier to excuse this behavior from a famous athlete because athletes are thought of as inspirational or something to aspire to be. People with disabilities are thought of as tragic, sad, dirty, stupid, and many other negatives. I just think this is such a clear example of how we hold athletes in such high esteem, and yet have no grace or empathy for people with disabilities." An elite athlete loses control of her bowels in a public competition, and the narrative that forms around her is one of warrior spirit, of the body pushed to its absolute limit, of the kind of determination that separates champions from everyone else. A child with a disability who cannot control their bodily functions in a classroom is treated as evidence that they should not be there at all. Same biohazard. Entirely different framework for understanding whose body is the problem and whose body is simply having a very hard day. Developmental Psychologist, Stephen Glicksman, PhD., has 30 years of experience working with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He says the backlash shows there may be some awareness of the difference between incontinence as a trait and as a behavior. "Still, the fact that I see people spitting on the street while at the same time know that many of those people wouldn't sit down on a subway next to a person with a disability who drools does show a certain level of inconsistency." "The truth is that it's ableism," Bohnert says. "It was never really about the poop. It was never really about the health and safety of adults. It's all about ableism." When asked what she hopes people take away from her video, she says she wants people to realize "how prevalent ableism is in our world, even though it is not spoken about as often as discrimination against other groups. It is incredibly disappointing to see an event like this, in which an athlete is praised for the same biohazard. It just shows me that it was never really about the poop." Glicksman also flips the script, explaining that responsibility comes from both sides. "It's also important to teach people with disabilities that tolerance of inappropriate or unsanitary behaviors doesn't make those behaviors okay if they can be addressed." He highlights the importance of teaching "normalized" behaviors to people with disabilities if they want to be included as equals and not treated as charity cases. "The community does have a responsibility to accept and include people with disabilities, but people with disabilities have a responsibility to behave in ways that promote that acceptance and inclusion as equals," he adds. joannawietrzyk / Instagram Bohnert's argument about ableism opens into a broader sociological question that Dante King, author of Diagnosing Whiteness and Anti-Blackness and a scholar who has taught at the Mayo Clinic, UCSF School of Medicine, Stanford Medical School, and Johns Hopkins, articulates with considerable precision. King is careful not to make a claim he cannot substantiate. "What interests me sociologically is not whether we can prove that a Black athlete would have been treated differently in this exact situation. We cannot know the counterfactual." What he is interested in is the pattern that the counterfactual question points toward. "The more important question is why race, disability, status, and social value so often influence who receives grace when the human body violates a social norm." "Historically, Black bodies have been subjected to extraordinary levels of scrutiny and have frequently been constructed as dangerous, dirty, undisciplined, hyperphysical, or uncivilized. That history matters when we examine who gets the benefit of the doubt in contemporary public life." An elite white athlete can experience a profound and visible loss of bodily control and have that vulnerability reinterpreted, by significant portions of the public, as determination, toughness, a warrior mentality. The framing is generous. "Whose vulnerability gets humanized, and whose vulnerability gets pathologized or punished?" asks King. People living with disabilities, chronic illness, cognitive differences, poverty, homelessness, or other stigmatized conditions may experience involuntary bodily events and be treated as disruptive, incompetent, or socially unacceptable. The athlete's identical experience becomes a story about the human spirit. The disabled child's identical experience becomes a reason to question their right to be in the room. “I think this is a clear case of white privilege and pretty privilege, and I am saying that as a white woman,” Bohnert explains. “Society is very quick to call out Black and brown folks whenever they can. I think the only reason she wasn't stopped in the middle of the competition is because of the privilege associated with being white, attractive, and famous." The TikTok creator known as VicaVibes, who competed on the same course approximately an hour after Wietrzyk without being told what had happened, raised the question that sits underneath all of this: "I can't help but wonder if this had happened to an ordinary participant instead of a world champion, would the result have become totally different?" Periods happen. Bodies happen. Elite sport is physical, and sometimes that physicality is visible. Why is this different? Dr Karen Tang, a physician who addressed the incident publicly, explains the distinction clearly. If menstrual blood reaches the ground during a race, everyone is wearing shoes; there is no direct transmission risk for infectious disease. Feces is categorically different. "Anytime you come into contact with human feces, there's a risk of infection. It's called fecal-oral route of transmission, of things like norovirus." The mechanism does not require direct contact with the source. It requires touching a contaminated surface and then touching your face, your mouth, your eyes. It requires doing burpees on a mat where fecal matter has been deposited and placing your hands and chest on that mat. It requires sitting on a rowing machine seat that a previous competitor used while heavily contaminated. Thousands of competitors used shared equipment at that event. The carpet was cleaned, according to multiple accounts, at the end of the night. THOUSANDS of people later. "There is literally no competition that is worth putting your health and the health and safety of your fellow competitors at risk," Dr Tang said. "There's no glory to that sort of a win." The first statement, now deleted, praised the athlete's courage and resilience without acknowledging the competitors who raced on a contaminated course without warning. A subsequent statement threatened to ban anyone who engaged in cyberbullying of the athlete, issued before any formal apology to those affected. The rulebook, it emerged, had specific penalties for spitting and littering on the course. It contained no protocol for the situation that unfolded at Station 4. Co-founder Moritz Fürste eventually issued a statement acknowledging that Hyrox had made a mistake by not reacting immediately, calling it his personal failure to have not foreseen the possibility. New rules were added to the rulebook. Affected lanes were deep-cleaned overnight, and contaminated equipment was removed. The carpet was replaced, but none of it helped the competitors who had already raced. Puma, (yes, you can laugh), which had a collaborative collection with Wietrzyk on its website, sneakily removed all references to her name from its online store. The links now return an error page, although Wietrzyk still lists Puma Training in her Instagram biography. Interestingly enough, she did turn off the comments on her Instagram… Some outraged keyboard warriors have gone further, suggesting that competing on contaminated shared equipment gave subsequent athletes a disadvantage that amounts to sabotage, whether intentional or not. The forty-five-second winning margin over the reigning world champion is the number they point to. Sabotage is a strong word, implying intent, but I know I would welcome a 45-second distance between myself and poo parade. Joanna Wietrzyk experienced a human bodily emergency. She should not be dehumanized or harassed because of it. At the same time, Hyrox had an obligation to protect every competitor using shared equipment. Compassion and public-health standards are not mutually exclusive." Joanna Wietrzyk is 24 years old and has now secured her place as the most famous Australian to shit the bed. The crown has been transferred. Raygun can rest. She has finally released a statement about the incident and seems to be taking accountability for what happened. "I want to offer my sincere apology to the people of China, my fellow competitors, the spectators and the HYROX organizers for what happened during the race in Beijing." She goes on to say that she did feel completely fine before the event and that she now knows she should have stepped away. "I am learning from this experience and will carry those lessons with me, including remembering that there is more to life than racing and knowing when it is right to step away." The easy version of this story is that Hyrox dropped the ball, learned a lesson, updated the rulebook, and everyone moves on. But Bohnert's question is not answered by a rulebook amendment, and Dante King's framework is not resolved by replacing the carpet. The grace extended to Wietrzyk that day was not written into any official protocol. It came from somewhere older and less visible than a competition rulebook, from a cultural instinct about whose body deserves the benefit of the doubt and whose body is the problem. Whether the blame belongs to Hyrox for not pulling her, to Wietrzyk for what many observers have called borderline narcissistic behavior in continuing, or to a culture that has turned extreme athleticism into a religion where suffering is always noble and stopping is always weakness, the sport now has to sit with the fact that its most viral moment was not a record broken or a championship won. It was a question about whose mess we are willing to clean up, and whose mess we use as a reason to keep people out of the room entirely.
