Yesterday, to mark International Women's Day, "Strike 4 Repeal" marches took place across Ireland and internationally.
Pro-choice campaigners had called for a nationwide strike to protest Ireland's strict anti-abortion laws, if the Irish Government did not call a Referendum by March 8th to repeal the 8th Amendment to the Irish Constitution. No Referendum was called.
As a result, thousands of men and women across Ireland and abroad (in solidarity with the Irish protestors) took a day off to protest against Ireland's abortion laws.
If protestors were unable to take a day off, they decided to show their solidarity by wearing black, posting on social media and staging walkouts at 12pm.
The timing was purposeful - to represent the estimated 12 women who must leave the Irish State on a daily basis, in order to procure an abortion in another jurisdiction.
