Two years ago I was fortunate to experience an awesome road trip through Namibia, a beautiful country in southern Africa. Although mostly known for its giant sand dunes and impressive wildlife, one of the most fascinating places I encountered there was the forming mining town of Kolmanskop.
Initially built-up following the discovery of diamonds in the area in 1908, the town was ultimately abandoned in 1956 following the discovery of the far richer diamond-bearing deposits some 270 km to the south of the town.
The sand dunes have slowly taken over this now ghost town in southern Namibia. Exploring this abandoned town is truly fascinating as you get glimpses of throughout the town of what life used to be like here. You simultaneously get the impression that time has stood still here and that time may also be running out as more and more sand continues to creep into the town’s buildings.
