In 2014, they started a subculture called Jimi Halloween (地味ハロウィン) which roughly translates to “mundane Halloween.” The idea behind it is as mundane as it sounds—people dress up in a costume that tells a boring story and involves plain and regular clothes.The whole thing was started by a small group of adults at Daily Portal Z who “kind of wanted to participate in the festivities of Halloween, but were too embarrassed to go all out in witch or zombie costumes.” Over the years, this tradition gained popularity and grew into a big event with hundreds of attendees who gather to party and explain their costumes to each other.
