The closely watched case of Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother accused of taking the lives of her three children, ended in disappointment for both the defense and prosecution on Friday, September 4, after the judge declared a mistrial.
The development came after the jury reached an impasse, with 11 members favoring an acquittal on the first-degree homicide charges on the grounds of insanity, while one believed the 36-year-old should be convicted.

The jury spent seven days deliberating but failed to reach an agreement, leading the foreperson to inform Judge William Sullivan of their deadlock with a “heavy heart” earlier today.
Because U.S. law requires all jurors to agree on a verdict, the judge said he had “no choice but to declare a mistrial.”
The decision brought a dramatic end to five weeks of proceedings, during which the court heard testimony from more than 85 witnesses and considered expert opinions from several psychiatrists.
Clancy, for those unfamiliar, despite admitting to fatally strangling her kids in 2023, pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against her by reason of lack of criminal responsibility, maintaining that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis at the time of the incident.
The mistrial does not set Clancy free.
She will remain in custody at Tewksbury Hospital while the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office determines how to proceed.
Among the options available to prosecutors are seeking a new trial, bargaining a new plea deal, or dropping the charges altogether.
Defense attorney Kevin Reddington previously indicated that, if prosecutors pursue another trial, they could potentially seek to reduce the charges to second-degree homicide.
Such a move could allow Clancy to choose a judge rather than a jury to decide her fate—an option that is not available under her current charges.

Throughout the proceedings, Reddington maintained that Clancy was experiencing hallucinations and hearing a man’s voice inside her head instructing her to end her children’s lives.
According to him, the episode was triggered by harsh medications Clancy had been taking to treat her postpartum depression.
Prosecutors rejected that account, arguing that Clancy understood what she was doing and had deliberately planned the circumstances surrounding the incident.
They pointed to her decision to send her then-husband, Patrick, out to retrieve her prescriptions and pick up takeout from a local restaurant, leaving her alone with the children at their Duxbury home.
Clancy’s supporters turned up outside the courthouse throughout the proceedings
A person facing homicide charges is not often the subject of widespread public sympathy, but Clancy became an unusual exception.
WBUR reporter Deborah Becker said approximately 400 people, most of them women dressed in pink, gathered outside the courthouse on Thursday, August 20.
Many carried signs expressing support for the defendant, including messages such as “you’re a good mom” and “the system failed you.”
Demonstration organizer Renee Kimball told Becker why she decided to arrange the crowd.
“I decided to do it spontaneously after watching the trial in Maine and hearing about Clancy’s repeated attempts to get postpartum mental health care,” she said.

Patrick was the first witness to testify in the case, and according to him, Lindsay began seeing a psychiatrist several months before the incident.
He also said she checked herself into a mental health facility for five days and sought treatment from two perinatal clinics, but continued to deteriorate.
Lindsay had confided in him about experiencing thoughts of harming their children, he added.
In an emotional account, he recalled returning to the family home and finding Lindsay in the backyard after she had jumped from a second-story window in an attempt to end her life.
Patrick then rushed inside, where he discovered his three children deceased in the basement.
If prosecutors eventually secure a first-degree homicide conviction, Clancy faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
Should another jury be convened and unanimously accept her insanity defense, however, she would remain committed to a state psychiatric facility indefinitely.
She would only be released if doctors determine that she is no longer a danger to herself or others.
