In the wake of the recent Fort McMurray's fires in Canada, many pets have been left behind as their owners were not allowed to return to pick them up until the danger had passed. But one man, Lee Ellis, decided to stay and look after the unfortunate pets.
Together with a couple of friends, Lee Ellis fed and comforted hundreds of stranded animals, having visited 300 homes in 4 days by bike. People were contacting him on Facebook, asking to check on their beloved pets. "It gave people a lot of great hope at a time of despair," he told CBC.
The frustrated pets were relieved, too. "They weren't only starved for food and water, they were starved for attention," Ellis told Daybreak South. "They were right on me. They were rubbing up against me." Though on the fifth day Ellis was spotted by the authorities and forced to leave the town because evacuation was mandatory, by that time the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals had started checking in on animals.
