Getting a divorce is a difficult decision, but millions of people walk that path every year. In 2023 alone, over 1.8 million Americans ended their marriages. In fact, if you look at everyone in the US who has ever said “I do,” about a third of them eventually ended up getting divorced.

While those numbers sound huge, the big picture is surprising. Divorce isn’t running wild like it used to. It has been steadily declining since its peak in the early 1980s.

Back in 1980, the refined divorce rate — which measures divorces per 1,000 married women — hit an all-time high of 22.6. It fell sharply to 14.4 in 2023.

Research shows that people who marry nowadays are older, more educated, and more financially established than the couples driving the 1980 peak.

Young adults are hitting pause on rushing down the aisle. Instead of marrying in their early twenties like previous generations, people are waiting until their late twenties or thirties.

At the same time, surveys reveal that living together before marriage has become the new normal. Moving in lets couples test their everyday compatibility.

This might also indicate that those who aren’t a good match tend to break up before they ever become a divorce statistic.

When it comes to deciding a relationship or a marriage is over, women are more likely than men to say it’s done. Several studies and surveys have found this.

“On average, many marriages end when women become fed up with men behaving badly. Clearly, plenty of women behave badly also, as many divorced men will attest. Nevertheless, it is a common scenario where one partner (more often the man) exhibits behavior that the other partner (more often the woman) finally decides is too much to bear,” says Scott Stanley, a senior fellow at the Institute for Family Studies.

According to a study presented at the American Sociological Association, women were more likely to initiate divorces because married women reported lower levels of relationship quality than married men.

Women are also in a better place in terms of financial independence, education, and career experience than they were in the 1970s and 1980s.

“Today, we have a generation of older women who have been able to attend college, have careers, and make their own money. If they are unhappy, they now have the economic independence and autonomy to divorce in older age rather than previous generations of women who might not have had the same opportunities,” says Rosie Shrout, assistant professor in the Purdue University Department of Human Development and Family Science.

While these stories show how one brutal sentence made women realize a relationship was doomed, research shows that it’s often a much slower burn.

Relationships rarely fall apart overnight. More often, couples just drift apart as unspoken needs, quiet resentment, and unresolved hurt build up over time until the emotional distance feels impossible to bridge.

That’s why the final trigger is rarely the primary cause of a breakup. Instead, it acts as the last straw on an already fragile system. Even a small event can overload a partner’s emotional capacity simply because there is no bandwidth left to forgive, adapt, or cope.

Couples routinely vow to stay together in sickness and in health, usually when major illness feels a lifetime away. But reality often tells a much harsher story. While some couples draw closer during a crisis, online support forums are filled with devastating tales of women being dumped via text mid-chemotherapy, or being cheated on at their lowest points.

As many stories in this list show, a major dealbreaker for women was a partner’s total lack of empathy during life-altering health crises or personal tragedies.

One woman was told she was being “too emotional” immediately after losing her sister. Another was blamed and guilt-tripped for checking out of the relationship while battling cancer.

According to a study done in the US, women are six times more likely to end up separated or divorced if they are diagnosed with cancer or multiple sclerosis than if their male partners were facing the same illness.
