A viral story about a woman being scammed out of $1,100 for a cruise turned into an internet manhunt when netizens started looking into the man she accused.
Influencer Vanessa Phillips, claimed a man she had previously traveled with persuaded her to send him money for a seven-day MSC cruise, complete with what appeared to be legitimate invoices, booking information and an itinerary.

According to Phillips, her supposed travel companion suddenly stopped answering her messages, blocked her number and left her without a reservation.
Determined to make the man pay, Phillips reportedly purchased another reservation on the same ship, boarded it anyway, tracked him down and confronted him on camera.
As the footage went viral, the man allegedly responsible for a $1,100 scam was identified as a pastor
“I knew he looked familiar,” one user wrote as photographs and old records circulated.
The man was identified as Armonte Wilson, publicly described as a pastor and ministry leader in Washington, DC. Moreover, government records showed he had previously pursued elected office.
Wilson has since denied taking Phillips' money and says the account circulating online is incomplete. As of September 8, there are no publicly reported criminal charges or arrests against him.
Vanessa Phillips said she first met Wilson while aboard an MSC cruise in December 2025. She described him as an “associate,” and the two remained in contact after returning home.
Months later, another opportunity to travel together came up.
According to Phillips, Wilson was looking for somebody to accompany him on an MSC sailing scheduled to leave Galveston on August 30, 2026, and return on September 6.
Phillips agreed.
What followed, she alleged, was an unusually elaborate arrangement designed to make the booking appear legitimate.
She said their plans included a “fake itinerary, fake agent booking numbers, invoices” and payments totaling close to $1,100.
Screenshots circulated alongside her account showing documentation that Phillips said she had received while organizing the trip.
To her, the paperwork appeared convincing enough that she sent the requested money.
She realized something was wrong while heading to Galveston
Phillips said she believed she had paid for a legitimate reservation aboard MSC Seascape, a large MSC Cruises vessel operating Caribbean sailings.
The problem became apparent as the departure date approached.
“As I made my way to Galveston to board the MSC cruise ship Seascape, Armonte Wilson stopped responding to my text messages and blocked my number,” she alleged.
Unable to reach him, Phillips contacted MSC directly and said a representative told her Wilson’s reservation had cost only $524.
“So why did he tell me that it cost $1100 you ask?” she wrote. “I asked the same thing.”
More importantly, Phillips said she discovered there was no reservation under her name at all, leading her to believe she had been deliberately deceived. Wilson, however, was still apparently planning to take the cruise himself, so Phillips decided she would get on the ship too.
Phillips confronted Wilson with the help of a “rainbow agent”
Philips created a completely separate booking aboard the same August 30 sailing after discovering she had no reservation through Wilson.
“What he didn’t count on was me making a completely separate booking aboard the same ship departing that day after I found out he had scammed me,” she wrote.
She also made her intentions clear to the MSC representative who assisted her.
“I will see him on this ship and he is going to gag when I do cause he’s going to face me and give me my motherf***ing money back,” Phillips recalled saying.
Once aboard, finding him presented another problem.
According to the viral account, Phillips received assistance from another passenger she called a “rainbow agent.” They allegedly located Wilson through an undisclosed hookup app and arranged a meeting without telling him Phillips would be there.
She then walked into the area carrying her phone and recording.
Wilson was enjoying himself in a jacuzzi.
The confrontation circulated heavily on X after being reposted on September 7
In the footage, Phillips approaches the jacuzzi and initially stands filming. Wilson does not immediately appear to notice her until another person points her out.
Then she addresses him.
“Oh, you thought I wasn’t going to get on here?” Phillips says in the clip. “When you took my $1,100? You thought I wasn’t going to make it? So where’s my money?”
Wilson then angrily disputes the accusation.
“Are you going to put hands on me?” he responds. “I didn’t take your money.”
The confrontation ultimately ended with Wilson seeking security.
What happened next aboard the cruise isn’t immediately clear. However, the encounter gave Phillips a video she could use to launch an internet manhunt with the specific intent of shaming and “exposing” her rival.
By September 6 through 8, her Facebook account and reposts across X, Instagram and Threads had turned the dispute into a viral internet investigation. Screenshots of alleged invoices, booking confirmations and private messages circulated alongside the confrontation footage.
Phillips also said she had filed a fraud complaint through the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center, or IC3.
Netizens took no time in uncovering every detail of Wilson’s identity
Beacon House, a Washington nonprofit focused on youth development, has a staff biography for Armonte Wilson, identifying him as a youth development mentor and describing him as a “community leader, educator, and ministry leader” from the Washington area.
The organization specifically says Wilson is “serving as a Pastor” and has experience in spiritual mentorship. His biography also lists work involving youth programs, after-school leadership and community health.
Social media immediately seized on the contrast between that public role and Phillips' allegations.
“The cat harness cruise scammer is a pastor. Color me unsurprised,” one user wrote.
But the internet was not finished digging.
Official records revealed Wilson had also pursued political office
Users soon began circulating claims that Wilson had previously run for office in Washington, DC.
Those claims were independently substantiated through official government records.
The DC Office of Campaign Finance recorded Armonte Wilson as registering on January 12, 2024, as a candidate for the Ward 8 seat on the Council of the District of Columbia during that election cycle.
His political activity continued the following year.
Official campaign-finance records show Wilson registered again on March 7, 2025, during the Ward 8 Council special-election cycle. A committee called Wilson for Council also appears in campaign-finance records.
He separately sought an Advisory Neighborhood Commission position in Single Member District 8D06 in 2025.
Wilson broke his silence after the allegations went viral
On September 8, Wilson addressed the controversy on Facebook.
“I’m aware of the posts and discussion surrounding the trip, and I understand why people have questions,” Wilson wrote.
“There’s a lot being said right now, but not everything being shared is accurate or complete.”
Wilson said he did not want to respond emotionally while the controversy was unfolding.
“I’m taking the time to make sure the facts are clear before saying more,” he continued.
He promised to “address the situation directly with the relevant facts” and correct misinformation, while asking users to stop distributing claims and private information they had not verified.
A later statement indicated he was retreating from the online fight entirely.
“At this point, continuing to argue back and forth online is not helping anyone,” Wilson wrote. “I’m taking a step back from the noise and choosing to handle things responsibly and privately.”
He added that he would not answer “every accusation, comment, or video” circulating about him.
“Some things deserve context, but not everything needs to be fought out on social media,” he said.
Wilson also wrote that he was “taking accountability for my part, learning from what has happened, and making changes where they are necessary,” although he did not specify what he was accepting responsibility for.
