According to the team at Progressive Money, the key to planning a lower cost celebration is to research a range of destinations and to party on the continent.
Reviewing average costs in some of the most popular European cities, the business has compiled a guide to jetting off to Europe, staying over and making the most of what New Year’s celebrations are on offer.
One of Europe’s most competitively priced cities for food and drink is Prague. Visitors can expect to pay less than £1.25 each for celebratory drinks, making it a particularly attractive destination for securing some post-Christmas savings. Hotels in the Czech capital can be booked for inside of £100, with all-night celebratory events on offer for circa £150 across the city. Being further afield, flights to Prague are typically higher at £225 per return.
Amsterdam meanwhile boasts culture, museums, urban parks and canal tours, not to mention the city-wide firework displays. Competitively priced, Brits can secure a return flight to The Netherlands over the New Year for less than £170. Hotel prices can be on the steep side and travellers may see rooms go for in excess of £150 per night. However, the city’s New Year’s events are among the most competitive in Europe and can be secured from £31, balancing out the costs.
Also popular, Barcelona offers great options for those looking to enjoy New Year’s events within the city’s artistically-rich centre. In addition to free street events, nightclub tickets can be secured for less than £50, with many staying open long into the early hours of 2018. Travel costs to the city from the UK cost less than £200, with drinks and meals out equating to £59. Visitors can expect to pay £70 for a hotel room.
With an enviable selection of fashion, arts and food, accommodation in Paris can be booked for inside of £55, giving revellers the opportunity to celebrate by the River Seine before venturing into the city’s seemingly infinite bars and restaurants. Though the Eurostar is convenient from central London, return flights to Paris can be booked over the busy period from £170 with the additional costs of meals, drinks and events totally a cool £175 on average.
Finally, visitors to Berlin are in for one of the best value New Year’s nights in the continent. With hotel rooms for inside £70 and flights for less than £200, the German capital offers a great package which sees meals and tripping coming in at £55 and events for £80 – making it the best value of these top destinations.

On the one hand, we’re all keen to continue the holiday cheer, but on the other, many of us are also conscious to keep an eye on our finances.
“Though offering very competitive drinks prices, the overall cost of a trip to Prague may surprise some party-goers. Meanwhile Paris offers the double convenience of being very close to the UK and offering a particularly competitive price. There also isn’t a strong correlation between the distance of your city break of choice and the overall mini break price, which may encourage some to travel further than they’d initially considered.
