Anxious individuals, meanwhile, may be especially sensitive to signs of rejection or abandonment. They can find themselves constantly wondering whether something is wrong, particularly when their partner suddenly becomes distant or less responsive.

Avoidant individuals, on the other hand, may experience too much closeness as a threat to their independence. Even when they genuinely care about their partner, they can unconsciously create emotional distance to feel more comfortable and in control. This might involve focusing heavily on a partner’s small flaws, becoming distant after moments of intimacy, or keeping certain thoughts and feelings to themselves.

Naturally, this can be confusing and painful for the person on the receiving end. One minute, everything may seem perfectly fine, and the next, their partner appears to be pulling away for reasons they don't understand. Over time, that constant emotional push and pull can leave both people feeling frustrated. What begins as two people trying to protect themselves can eventually become a pattern that damages the relationship.

The book also discusses what is often called the “anxious-avoidant trap,” a difficult cycle that can make a relationship feel like an emotional roller coaster. The anxious partner may seek more closeness and reassurance, while the avoidant partner responds by pulling further away. Unfortunately, that distance can make the anxious partner even more worried, causing them to pursue their partner even harder. And so, the cycle continues.

Being able to say, “This is how I feel, and this is what I need,” can reveal a lot about whether two people can meet each other halfway. Sometimes, better communication can strengthen a relationship. Other times, it may reveal an incompatibility that neither person can fix alone.

Unresolved conflict and lingering resentment can also slowly push a couple apart. Every relationship has disagreements, of course, and arguing occasionally doesn't automatically mean a relationship is doomed. The real issue is often what happens after the argument. Do both people talk things through and try to find a solution, or do they simply sweep the problem under the rug and pretend nothing happened?

According to research published in the Journal of Marriage and Family, couples who avoid dealing with conflict directly may face a greater risk of relationship dissatisfaction. It's not necessarily the number of arguments that matters most, but how partners handle them. When hurt feelings and frustrations are repeatedly ignored, they can quietly turn into resentment. Eventually, those unresolved issues may create an emotional wall between two people who were once incredibly close.
