When you grow up with a narcissistic parent, your entire environment becomes unpredictable. You never know which version of your parent you’ll get. One day they might show you affection, but the next day they completely ignore you.

Acceptance is never guaranteed, and it’s strictly conditional, meaning you only get love when you perform well or do exactly what they want. Because of this, kids in these homes never build a true sense of emotional safety.

A study published in the medical journal Cureus shows that over time, the constant instability at home messes with a person’s identity. Adults raised in these conditions often struggle with a broken self-image and have a really hard time managing heavy emotions like stress, anger, or sadness. They are also far more likely to battle anxiety and depression later in life.
