Bored Panda reached out to Ruth to learn more about her creative process and herself. To start, we were curious to discover how her journey as a comic artist began. The artist shared, "I've always loved drawing since I was a kid, but it was in 2017 when one of my students encouraged me to start posting my doodles and ideas on Instagram."
Have you ever marveled at a cartoon or illustration and wondered, "How did they come up with that?" Ruth told us that she mostly gets her ideas when she's running. "It's probably the only time I get for myself when I'm not interrupted by anything or I'm not busy doing something else. I usually write down the idea on my phone or record an audio. Every now and then, I check my notes and choose the one I like according to the moment or the mood I'm in."
Ruth loves it when her followers let her know that her comics are very funny and witty. "Or when they suggest I should start submitting some of my drawings to The New Yorker... I'd love that!"
Creating comics is a fascinating and creative journey. However, like any artistic endeavor, cartoonists encounter a set of challenges. Ruth says that artists depend on the support of their followers, and nowadays, this support often comes from social media. It can be really frustrating for artists when their art doesn't reach as many people as before. "For a while, I thought my art wasn't that good but after giving it a lot of thought, I'm not here for likes: just want to draw what I like.
But the biggest challenge of them all is to find time to sit down and draw. See, I'm a science teacher working full time and I love it! So when I'm not at work, I'm preparing stuff for the kids or making something up to have more enjoyable classes."
