Imagine that every single day, your family sends you to pick up some rice from a corner shop. Days go by, and you just can’t take it anymore. At this point, bulk-buying seems like the only solution, and without further ado, you order a few sacks in advance. But things don't go according to plan and you end up covered in rice from head to toe.

This is what happened to the brother-in-law of one Indian man named Shiv Ramda. Shiv, who came to be at the center of the comical incident, started sharing the live updates on a Twitter thread, but the more he tweeted, the more epic the situation became.

Initially, due to some miscommunication, Shiv and his family were left with a lorry filled with rice standing right outside their house. But people on Twitter soon realized that this was just the tip of the iceberg. The 68th National Sample Survey revealed that a rural Indian eats 6 kg of rice every month, and an urban Indian consumes 4.5 kg of rice per month.

90% of India’s rice is consumed by Indians so the demand for produce is incredibly high, especially with the country’s ever-growing population. It’s now expected that India’s population will reach 1.52 billion by the year 2036 with a whopping 70% increase in urban areas, so the demand is nowhere near about to slow down. But it seems that India’s rice production is doing better than ever. According to a report from the Foreign Agricultural Service of the US Department of Agriculture, India is heading toward near-record rice production for 2020-21.

Meanwhile, the significance of rice is much more than a staple food. Culturally, it’s been used for ceremonial and worship purposes as an offering to Gods and Goddesses. It's also associated with prosperity and fertility, hence the custom of throwing rice at newlyweds. Rice is also one of the first foods babies eat when they start consuming solid foods.
