As Joel Cervantes Macias was driving in the Little Village area of Chicago, he saw an elderly man struggling to push a popsicle cart. The man was 89-year-old Fidencio Sanchez. He and his wife had recently lost their only daughter and they'd been selling paletas, a type of Mexican popsicle, to pay the bills. As his wife had fallen ill however, Fidencio had no choice but to push the cart alone.
"It broke my heart seeing this man that should be enjoying retirement still working at this age," wrote Macias. So wanting to help the old man in some way, he bought 20 popsicles for $50. Macias and his friend Joe Loera also started a GoFundMe campaign to raise $3,000 for Fidencio and his wife. And the internet responded in epic fashion by donating over $250,000 USD in just five days!
