"Winter is coming and 300 stray dogs in Dubrovnik would face death if it were not for the efforts of volunteer animal lovers. These brave people have created a shelter because Dubrovnik has ignored Croatian law and failed to do so. These animal lovers deserve the nation’s thanks, but instead their Zarkovica Animal Shelter has been illegally raided by Dubrovnik officials and its founder arrested. We urge the Minister of Agriculture and the Mayor of Dubrovnik to end this shameful situation and act immediately to provide all the supplies Zarkovica needs to get the dogs through winter and to urgently construct a safe haven for the dogs" says on Network for Animals, one of many web pages that brought attention to Žarkovica, an 'illegal' shelter on a hill with over 300 dogs, where Sandra Sambrailo spent most of her life volunteering.
She is living in a transport container, with no electricity, water or a bathroom. With no money or help from Dubrovnik' officials she begs for help. As cold weather arrived it started bringing snow and rain, which means that living conditions in the shelter are getting worse. Fences are broken, dog houses are shaking and the dogs are freezing.
Sandra says: "I can't do it anymore on my own, and I want a life for them."
