High school shop students in Jacksonville, Florida are real heroes in the eyes of shelter dogs and feral felines as they make and donate animal houses. The newly-built houses provide for a great living space the neglected pooches and kitties can enjoy.
Shop teacher Barry Stewart originally came up with the idea to use shop classes for such a meaningful purpose while teaching at a school in North Carolina 14 years ago. He got inspired when he heard about a program that provides houses to lower-income residents who own dogs. “Each year, there are always a few students in the class that are passionate about pets and put a little extra effort into it. They want everything to fit perfectly and spend a lot of time and care on what they’re doing,” Mr. Stewart told PEOPLE.
When making dog and cat houses, the students also learn the skills needed to build an actual house, only on a much smaller scale. On top of that, the youngsters boost their problem-solving skills and get their minds stimulated – all while helping our four-legged friends in need.
So far Stewart and his students have donated over 600 dog houses and 100 feral cat houses!
