'Sweden is the rape capital of the world,' has become a popular trope, pushed mainly by right-wing politicians and their ignorant followers, as a means to denigrate Sweden's open-minded attitude towards the integration of migrants and refugees into their society.
Known universally as a peaceful nation, ranking highly on social metrics such as equality and happiness, Sweden has become somewhat of a target for populists and nationalists, who can't stand to see a multicultural, socialist democracy doing so well.
However, on first glance, the statistics do point to Sweden having alarmingly high numbers of rape offences. So what gives? As usual, a little deeper understanding of context gives answers. One Swede, tired of this vacuous, simplistic phrase trotted out as a political weapon against his country, decided that enough was enough and it was time to answer back. His response is as enlightening as it is entertaining, highlighting the differences that exist between definitions of rape in different countries, as well as the confidence to report offences that comes with a stable society and justice system.
