The majority of people dream of marrying for love. If you’re going to commit to spending the rest of your life with someone, you probably want that person to make you feel like you’re the star of your very own romantic comedy. However, love isn’t everyone’s top priority. Some people are more concerned about living in a nice house, having access to a yacht, and never having to work another day in their lives.
According to BetterHelp, marrying for money actually is an age-old practice. In the 18th century, for example, women didn’t have a lot of opportunities. Most didn’t have access to the same education and career prospects as their male peers. So landing a wealthy spouse was a way to ensure that they would have a comfortable future.
Today, however, times have changed, and women can build successful careers entirely on their own. While some still hope to find a partner that will take care of them financially, BetterHelp warns that this may lead to marital issues.
If a relationship is built on a superficial foundation, spouses may feel lonely. Plus, many wealthy individuals are already wary when dating, as they don’t want to be with someone who cares more about their money than their personality.
Being with someone who comes from a completely different socioeconomic background can also strain a marriage. The wealthier spouse may inherently have more power in the relationship, which can make it difficult for their partner to be honest about their needs and desires.
They might be scared of speaking up about things that bother them if they’re worried that their lifestyle will be taken away. Meanwhile, the breadwinner might feel like they can get away with a lot in the relationship, if their partner would be completely broke if they left.
Wealthy people tend to only interact with other wealthy individuals

Plus, it’s important to note that money only increases a person’s happiness to a certain extent. It’s obvious that money can make a person’s life easier if they never have to stress about purchasing basic necessities. And if they can afford to take a couple of vacations every year, that’s even better! But according to one study, that increase in life satisfaction tends to plateau after about $108,000.
Being a billionaire will undoubtedly make your life easier, but it won’t necessarily make you any happier than someone who lives a simple, upper-middle-class life.
And, as the father in this story pointed out, those who come from extreme wealth are not likely to date people from lower socioeconomic classes. So it’s extremely unlikely for a billionaire to brush shoulders with, let alone marry, someone who isn’t already rich.
El Pais notes that the wealthy often marry other wealthy individuals because they understand each other’s lifestyles, and they don’t have to worry about their partner using them for money. Rich people have more in common with other rich people, as they likely grew up in similar households. And to be frank, they often have no desire to interact with anyone outside of the 1%.
While it’s common, and understandable, for young adults to have big dreams, marrying rich probably isn’t the best goal to have.
