A funny T-shirt can tell you a surprising amount about the person wearing it before they have even said hello. A 2024 study on slogan apparel found that people use clothing to express themselves, even when they aren't consciously trying to make a statement.
So that shirt you spotted on the bus might have been carefully chosen, or it might have been the cleanest thing on the chair that morning. We may never know.

Marketing researcher Martin Eisend reviewed hundreds of findings on humor in advertising and found that funny messages can grab attention and create more positive reactions.
A T-shirt is obviously not a TV commercial, but the idea still fits. Give someone a good enough punchline to wear, and chances are they will be remembered for it.
A T-shirt can say a little about who you are, what you like, or even the group you feel connected to, without you having to explain yourself. Sometimes a shirt has a whole story behind it, and other times it is just something funny you saw and thought, “Yep, that’s coming home with me.”
Either way, it is a good way to start a conversation with a stranger and socialize, which is a good job for a piece of clothing.
There’s a lot of confidence in wearing a joke across your chest. If you tell a joke and it falls flat, you can change the subject and pretend nothing happened. A T-shirt gives you no such luxury.
The punchline is sitting there all day, waiting for strangers to notice it. And if the joke is a questionable one, you are basically walking around giving the entire neighborhood permission to judge you.
Some T-shirt slogans get you. You might spot one with an upside-down Nike swoosh and the words “I can’t do it today” and think, “Honestly, same.” It is funny because you know exactly what it means.
We all have those days when getting through the day feels like enough of an achievement, so seeing someone else put that feeling on a shirt can make you laugh and think, “Okay, at least I’m not alone.”
Graphic and slogan tees have been used to show everything from personal interests to social and political views, partly because the message is impossible to miss when it is walking around in public.
Researchers have even described slogan T-shirts as a form of “social fashion” because they can make certain ideas more visible.
