The affair partner might have been a grooming victim
It's highly probable that the father groomed one of his students when he started an affair with her. His excuse that it "happened after graduation" is on par with what those who engage in misconduct with minors say. Essentially, what they mean is that "nothing happened" while she was still his student, although he most likely engaged in grooming patterns.
