When it comes to talking about things of the afterlife, atheists are often like toddlers with their fingers in their ears, going “lalalalala.” Louisa Peck was that person. A self-described materialist atheist who, by her own admission, despised all things churchy.
She had spent her entire life firmly on the side of science and deeply unimpressed by anything that smelled of the supernatural. And then, in November 1982, at 22 years old, inside a Manhattan nightclub, her heart stopped for three minutes. What happened next changed everything. And she was not even slightly happy about it.

One woman saw herself as a true atheist, but after her NDE, she came back a believer
Peck was on a date, and they had been drinking and using illegal substances when they ran out and bought more from a stranger inside the club. What they were sold instead was lidocaine, a local anesthetic. The effects came on quickly, and her peripheral vision began to close in. Orange speckles appeared in front of her eyes, and the writing on a bathroom stall became unreadable.
By the time she made it back to her date and told him she could not breathe, her body was already shutting down. She suffered a grand mal seizure followed by cardiac arrest. A bartender performed CPR while Peck lay unresponsive on the nightclub floor. For approximately three minutes, she was gone. And while her body was there, she was somewhere else entirely.

Peck describes rocketing out of Manhattan before finding herself hundreds of feet above an ocean, diving toward the water below. "I could see the ocean below me, and I was diving toward it, and I thought, isn't it like concrete because I'm like 300 feet up?" she told Need To Know.
"But I didn't have any fear. I was just like, we'll see." She dove straight down, spotted an old weather-worn house, and knew instinctively that it had something to do with her. The next moment, she was at the door.
They welcomed her with love, but soon told her she needed to go back to life
She was a woman who spent her whole life dismissing anything spiritual, and she now suddenly understood something she had never cared about before. The people who had come before her were there. She could not see them, but she could feel generations of her family surrounding her, with the strongest presence coming from a grandfather who had gone before she was born.
"They were all really excited to meet me, really happy that I was crossing over, ready to greet me," she said. "But I couldn't see them, I could just feel them." From there, she was carried through a window and toward a light. "I was just completely engulfed by love, completely saturated with love," she said. Then something grabbed her by the sternum. A voice told her: "You can't stay. You're not done yet."
Back in the nightclub, CPR continued. After roughly three minutes, Peck's heart started beating again. She was back, and her immediate, unfiltered response to being alive again? "I had just come alive again; it was the hugest bummer."
She wasn't too happy about it, but she says after her return she now has the ability to see and speak to ghosts
Peck said she was determined to settle back in as if nothing had happened, but something had permanently changed. She began seeing ghosts. She received what she describes as messages from the other side, including a conversation with her late sister that she kept private for years out of fear of seeming, as she put it, "grandiose and crazy."
She sometimes knew things before they happened. And it was these ongoing experiences that ultimately broke through her skepticism entirely. "It was the aftereffects, not the NDE itself, that proved to me the coexistence of a spiritual plane," she said.

Experts say nearly 70% of people with these kinds of experiences come back more spiritual
Louisa Peck is far from alone in what she experienced, or in how it changed her. Research suggests that around 70% of people who have a NDE report becoming significantly more religious or spiritual afterward, regardless of what they believed before their heart stopped.
As for the experience itself, neuroscientists point to a combination of severe oxygen shortage, electrical surges in the brain, and an intense inward rush of deep personal memories as the most likely explanation. The brain, starved of oxygen and firing in ways it never does during ordinary consciousness, and the result can feel more real than anything experienced in waking life.
There is also a concept worth knowing called cryptomnesia, which describes the phenomenon in which the brain retrieves stored memories or information without the person realizing that this is what is happening. The memory surfaces feeling entirely new, as though it is being experienced for the first time rather than recalled.
In the context of NDE, some researchers suggest that cryptomnesia may explain why people encounter specific ancestors or visit places that feel deeply familiar. The brain is not generating new information but is retrieving deeply buried emotional memories and presenting them as vivid, present experiences. This means even just seeing a photograph could have triggered the memory of her grandfather.
