It was Thanksgiving Day and my dad went up a ladder to the garage roof to put up Christmas lights. He'd had a few beers with lunch and was wearing flip-flops, not proper shoes. He slipped and fell onto our concrete driveway. Catastrophic brain injury. He was 58 years old. He never recovered. He was near-vegetative for 21 years, bedridden, in diapers (he was incontinent), had to have a trach and feeding tube put in. I lost my father that day in November 2000, even though he did not actually díe until 21 years later. I loved my father dearly, but his choices affected not only his life, but the lives of his children as well (my sister and I both stayed living at home to help take care of him. Neither of us have accomplished jack shít in our lives.) If you have to go up a ladder, be careful, be aware, take precautions, and have someone "spot" you.
